Human Powered Boats

H.M.S. Insomia

"faster than a duck"

We, Ernest "pulverizer" Kim and Mark "A-wing" S., in conjuction with advisor, Christopher "I had a hydroplane" Bull, are currently designing a Human Powered Boat .

Mark and Ernie are juniors at Brown University , concentrating in Mechanical Engineering. Chris is a real, live, engineer at Brown.

The design ends May 17th and construction will begin in September. Our fiberglass boat will be 11 feet long (sorry about the units, civilized world) with a maximum beam of 26 inches. It is 1 foot deep. The drive train is based on a tandum recumbent system and the boat is propelled by a screw propellar. We are hoping to reach speeds up to 12 knots.

I'm afraid we don't have too many pretty pictures to show you, but here is a peak at the hull (also note the wallpaper):

NOTE: The design is first design is now complete. I'm afraid I don't have time to put up any drawings yet but I will as soon as I can. I am leaving for Texas for the summer very soon and do not know what sort of access I will have to the internet. This page with be updated as soon as possible. -May 30, 1996
